TESTING SCHEDULE

A simple water-testing routine

Test more frequently in new aquariums, after adding fish, after filter disruption, during heat or equipment problems, and whenever fish behave unusually. In an established aquarium, consistent records are more useful than occasional intensive testing.

  1. Check temperature daily at a glance and verify the heater is operating normally.
  2. Test ammonia and nitrite during cycling and whenever fish gasp, clamp fins, hide, or stop eating.
  3. Track nitrate before scheduled water changes to evaluate whether the routine is adequate.
  4. Record pH periodically so sudden movement is easier to identify.
  5. Check GH and KH when source water changes, pH becomes unstable, or mineral conditions are uncertain.

How to respond to ammonia or nitrite

Detectable ammonia or nitrite requires prompt action. The immediate goal is to reduce exposure while identifying why the biological filter is not processing waste adequately.

  • Perform a partial water change with conditioned, temperature-matched water.
  • Increase oxygenation and confirm the filter is running normally.
  • Reduce feeding temporarily to lower incoming waste.
  • Check for dead livestock, decaying food, clogged flow, or recently replaced filter media.
  • Continue testing because one water change may not correct the underlying cause.

Can guppies live without a heater?

They may tolerate a reliably warm room, but a thermostatic heater is usually safer where temperature changes significantly between day and night or across seasons.

Is hard water bad for guppies?

Moderately hard water is commonly suitable. Problems are more likely when water is extremely soft, unsuitable for the line, or changed abruptly.

Why is my pH changing?

Low buffering, accumulated waste, source-water changes, substrate, wood, rocks, and biological activity can affect pH. Test both source and aquarium water before adding corrective products.

Is nitrate at 40 ppm automatically an emergency?
