MOLLY FISH GUIDE
Molly fish care & future HiGuppy availability.
HiGuppy does not currently have a published Molly product listing. Use this page to plan the aquarium, water routine, group size and receiving setup before availability goes live. When Molly listings are published, the current product page will control stock, price, fish format, photo context and order-specific details.
Mollies and guppies are related livebearers, but a Molly group should be planned around its own adult size, water conditions, group structure and future fry—not copied from a guppy setup automatically.
STARTING REFERENCES
Use Molly-specific planning numbers, then adjust for the exact fish and aquarium.
These starting references are based on OATA’s guppy and Molly care guidance. They are planning ranges rather than a promise that every Molly form should be kept identically. The exact variety, adult size, sex ratio, local water source and aquarium load still matter.
Temperature
20–28°C as a broad starting reference. Stability matters more than chasing a single exact number.
pH
7.0–8.0 as a starting range. Avoid abrupt chemistry changes just to hit a target.
Ammonia & nitrite
0 mg/L. A cycled biological filter and regular testing are part of the plan.
General hardness
8–18°dH as a broad reference. Test the water you actually use.
Small-group volume
OATA lists 45+ litres for a small group of smaller Molly forms.
Sailfin planning
OATA lists 80+ litres for sailfin mollies, which can grow larger than many common forms.
Adult size
Many mollies remain below about 10 cm; sailfin forms may reach around 15 cm.
Group planning
Plan for at least three fish; for mixed-sex groups, two females per male is a useful starting ratio rather than a guarantee against chasing.

TANK SETUP
Build the aquarium around the adult group, not the fish you see on day one.
Choose practical volume
Use the adult form and planned group size to choose the largest practical aquarium. More water volume gives temperature and water quality more room to remain stable.
Cycle before stocking
Establish biological filtration before the intended group arrives. Do not rely on clear-looking water as proof that an aquarium is ready for livestock.
Keep open swimming space
Plants and smooth décor can provide cover, but leave enough open water to watch every fish, feed the full group and perform maintenance.
Plan maintenance access
Leave room around the tank for a net, siphon, filter service and water changes. A setup that is hard to maintain usually becomes harder to keep stable.
WATER QUALITY
Use a testing and maintenance routine you can repeat.
- 01
Record the baseline
Log temperature, pH, hardness, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate before adding the intended group so you know what “normal” looks like in your aquarium.
- 02
Test more during change
Increase testing while a tank is new, after stocking changes, after equipment problems, or whenever behavior and water readings shift.
- 03
Change water deliberately
Use conditioned replacement water close to tank temperature. Match partial-water-change frequency to readings, stocking and filter capacity rather than a rigid calendar alone.
- 04
Preserve biological filtration
When filter media needs cleaning, avoid destroying established biological material. If the numbers move in the wrong direction, investigate before changing several variables at once.
FEEDING
Feed for steady condition without turning food into a water-quality problem.
Use measured portions
Ask what food and feeding rhythm the fish are already used to, then change routines gradually if needed. Offer amounts the group can finish promptly and remove obvious leftovers.
Watch the whole group
Check whether smaller or less assertive fish reach food. Record major appetite changes alongside water readings so feeding behavior is interpreted in context.
TANK MATES & FRY
Compatibility is a whole-aquarium decision, not a species-name shortcut.
Mollies with guppies
They may share an aquarium when adult size, water conditions, stocking, swimming space and temperament all work together. “Both are livebearers” is not enough by itself.
Mixed-sex groups
Plan for the possibility of fry before the aquarium is full. Extra population can change filtration load, feeding needs and space requirements quickly.
Single-sex planning
If you do not want fry, decide whether a single-sex group fits your goal. Sexing can have uncertainty, especially with younger fish, so keep a contingency plan.
Observe behavior
A compatibility plan should not depend on one fish hiding all day or on emergency separation after conflict has already become persistent.
FUTURE ORDERING & RECEIVING
If Molly listings go live, the same route and receiving discipline still matter.
For a future international Molly order, HiGuppy’s current live-fish route is Vietnam → professional transshipper → buyer. Destination acceptance, weather, carrier conditions, fish readiness, transshipper arrangements and destination charges can affect whether a shipment can be arranged. Read the current Shipping, Live Arrival / DOA and Acclimation pages before ordering.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Molly fish planning FAQ
Are Molly fish available from HiGuppy now?
This guide does not itself confirm stock. Check the current HiGuppy Shop. If no Molly product listing is published there, Molly availability is still upcoming rather than orderable.
Can Mollies live with guppies?
They may be compatible when the aquarium supports the adult size, water conditions, group structure and swimming space of both species. Do not assume compatibility only because both are livebearers.
What tank size should I plan for Mollies?
OATA lists at least 45 litres for a small group of smaller Molly forms and at least 80 litres for sailfin mollies as starting references. The exact adult group, filtration and aquarium footprint still matter.
What water parameters should I plan around?
OATA gives broad starting references of 20–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, ammonia and nitrite at 0 mg/L, and general hardness around 8–18°dH. Stability and the actual water source remain important.
Should I plan for fry?
Yes if considering a mixed-sex group. Decide in advance how extra fish, grow-out space, filtration load and future population will be managed.
How will future Molly shipping work?
If HiGuppy publishes Molly listings for international sale, the current live-fish route and written order terms will apply unless a specific listing says otherwise. Review the Shipping and Live Arrival / DOA policies before checkout.
Bring your aquarium plan to HiGuppy before Molly listings go live.
Share your aquarium volume, current water readings, preferred Molly form, group size, tank mates and destination. That gives HiGuppy useful context without pretending a future variety or quantity is already in stock.
